Union government has extended the deadline for the PMAY-G scheme until March 2024, aiming to complete the construction of 2.95 crore units across the country. Under the PMAY-G scheme, beneficiaries receive Rs 1.2 lakh in plain areas and Rs 1.3 lakh in difficult areas, integrated action plan districts, and hilly states.

VILLUPURAM: In response to queries from Villupuram MP D Ravikumar, Union Minister of State for Rural Development, Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, affirmed that the central government has no intention to increase the unit assistance of Rs 1.2 lakh under the Prime Minister Awaas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G) scheme. Jyoti stated that the existing unit assistance aligns with the approval of the Union cabinet, and as of now, there is no proposal under consideration for its augmentation.

Jyoti further mentioned that the Union government has extended the deadline for the PMAY-G scheme until March 2024, aiming to complete the construction of 2.95 crore units across the country. Responding to concerns about rising construction material prices, she clarified that there are currently no plans to revise the unit assistance.

Under the PMAY-G scheme, beneficiaries receive Rs 1.2 lakh in plain areas and Rs 1.3 lakh in difficult areas, integrated action plan districts, and hilly states. Additionally, the scheme facilitates 90–95 man-days of unskilled labor wages through convergence with the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). The Union government also allocates Rs 12,000 for toilet construction through Swachh Bharat Mission – Gramin, MGNREGS, or other dedicated funding sources.

Jyoti provided information on the allocation of Rs 3,536.92 crore to Tamil Nadu from the financial year 2016-17 to 2021-22. She highlighted the distribution of houses in the state with various construction materials and specified that the Union government covers 60% of the unit cost, with the remaining 40% borne by the respective state governments. Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal have the highest numbers of huts in the country, according to the Union government.
